Shrek III

The kids got back from Albuquerque Thursday. I’m thankful they were able to spend time with Alan’s family, especially Grandma. But it’s always nice to come home and it’s nice to have them here. We planned to go see Pirates this weekend, but by the time we got to the theater it was sold out. So we went to Shrek instead.

Like I & II, Shrek III offered laugh out loud lines, but they were fewer and further between. That’s not to say the humor has dulled a bit, it is still timely and witty. When Shrek visits a high school to find Arthur, he is confronted with typical teen stereotypes from mean girls and bullying jocks to geeks with headgear. Unfortunately, little time is spent getting to know Artie or his tormentors, as he is quickly swept away to take his place on the throne. Had the story occured in the school setting, the sharp wit and hip references to pop culture would have made Shrek III the best yet.

Instead, it moves too quickly from Shrek learning he is to take the throne, to learning he is going to be a father, to learning Prince Charming has mobilized villians from hundreds of stories to take over Far Far Away. Too many stories, too many tired characters and too little time spent on Artie. BTW, too little screen time for the triplets!
